Greener Charge
Don’t plug in
Wait until tomorrow if you can.
Last updated: 12:04pm
Why tomorrow?
The UK grid is forecast to be 13% cleaner tomorrow night (98g CO2 per kWh) than tonight (113g per kWh).
We assume you schedule your charge overnight, between 11:30pm and 5:30am. We update the forecast hourly, so check back just before you plug in.
Why use this?
On the grid, some days are greener than others, usually when it's windy. By charging on those days you can make a meaningful reduction to your carbon footprint.
We ran a simple simulation to compare two strategies for the whole of 2024: plugging in every night, versus checking the carbon intensity forecast each day to decide whether to plug in or wait until the next night.
In our tests, the Greener Charge approach resulted in approximately 25% lower carbon emissions over the year.
How it works
We use data from the National Energy System Operator (NESO)'s Grid Intensity Forecast API to compare the carbon intensity of the grid tonight with tomorrow, helping you choose when to charge your vehicle.
Forecast last updated: April 02 2025 at 12:04pm
Average grid carbon intensity for the last 30 days: 144g CO2 per kWh.
How it compares
Octopus Energy provides a similar forecast called Greener Days. If you're already an Octopus customer using Greener Days, great! - it's more detailed, uses a different data source, and you can earn rewards from Octopus. This website is intended for people who don't use Greener Days.
We're not affiliated with NESO or Octopus Energy.
